Su cine, Libertad (Her theatre, Libertad)
Su Cine Libertad is a documentary project I created in 2018. In the 1960s, my grandmother migrated to the United States, leaving behind her home in Tijuana and the movie theater, Cine Libertad—one of the first theaters built in Colonia Libertad during the 1940s.
For decades, the theater existed only in memory. In 2018, I brought her back. We found it abandoned, its walls fractured by time and on the verge of renovation. As we walked through its ruins, her body and the building reflected one another—both marked by endurance, adaptation, and the passage of time.
I believe the spaces we inhabit preserve our stories, becoming silent accomplices to our lives.
If these spaces could speak, what would they say?
